Jamestown HS continues with Envirothon success
On April 4, 2001, members of
the Jamestown High School Envirothon team placed first in the Virginia
Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts Area III Envirothon
competition. The event, hosted by the Monacan SWCD, was held at the Virginia
Farm Bureau Headquarters in Goochland County.
Winners of local Envirothon
competitions were eligible to compete in the regional event. Jamestown HS,
representing Colonial SWCD, competed against three other teams: Clover Hill HS
(James River SWCD), Goochland HS (Monacan SWCD), and Spotsylvania HS
(Tri-County/City SWCD).
Contestants were judged in six
topics: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, Urban Non-Point Source Pollution,
and an Oral Presentation. Jamestown’s victory in three events (Aquatics,
Soils, and Wildlife) led to the
overall win. Clover Hill placed first in the oral presentation and won second
place overall. Goochland placed first in Forestry and Urban NPS and won third
overall.
The top three teams from each
Area competition will compete in the Virginia Envirothon May 20 and 21 at Smith
Mountain Lake 4-H Center. The winning team from the state competition wins a
trip to Mississippi to compete in the International Canon Envirothon sponsored
by the National Association of Conservation Districts.
