Jamestown High School Repeats Win at District Envirothon

On March 15, 2001, students from Jamestown High School won the fifth annual Colonial Soil and Water Conservation District Envirothon held at the New Kent Forestry Center in Providence Forge.   Teams representing Jamestown High School, New Horizons Governor’s School, and New Kent High School battled for first place District honors and the chance to move to the Area III Envirothon competition in April.

Jamestown HS.jpg (27927 bytes) Colonial SWCD Director Steve Lueke and Education Coordinator Kelley Bartell awarded ribbons and plaques to the teams.  Coached by teachers Charlie Dubay and Carol McDowell, Jamestown team members repeated last year’s accomplishment by taking first place.  Team members were Alice Cheng, Mike Nester, Yu Kwan Chan, Kerry Browder, and Brandon Babcock.
New Kent placed second in the competition. The team was coached by Karen Schureman, Julie Bradshaw, and Sue Perry.  The team consisted of Kendra Havens, Jessica Easton, Lauren Mead, Sam Howard, Adrienne Gainer, and Tiffany Updike.   New Kent HS.jpg (28752 bytes)
New Horizons .jpg (20302 bytes) New Horizons placed third.  The team, coached by Patricia Grunow, consisted of Jim Maxwell, James Atwell, James Rogers, Patrick Butler, Brandon Major, and Joshua Pothen. 
Jamestown HS will compete in the next level of competition in Goochland County in April.  The top three teams from that regional competition will move on to the State event at Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center in May.  One team will travel to Mississippi in July to represent Virginia in the International Envirothon.
