Envirothon is a natural resources competition for high school students. Teams of students measure their knowledge of environmental issues by competing in five areas: aquatics,  forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current topic that varies each year. In 2001, the environmental issue is urban non-point source pollution at the household and home site.

Teams first compete at the local, or District event.  Each district winner is eligible to compete in the regional, or Area, level.  The top three teams from each Area compete in the State contest.  One team from the State competition represents Virginia in the International Canon Envirothon.

A variety of sources can yield Envirothon teams.  Ecology clubs, 4-H clubs, scout groups, FFA clubs, or groups of home-schooled students may form teams.  A responsible adult is needed to supervise the team's training and chaperone the students at competitions.

Envirothon is sponsored by soil and water conservation districts across the United States and Canada, the National Association of Conservation Districts, and Canon, USA.
