Kindergarten and First Grade
Mind
Your Manners
45
min
Students will discover the impact each person has on the
environment and learn good stewardship skills through a fun story about a
singing seal.
SOLs: Science K.10, 1.8
Second Grade
Molecules
in Motion
45 min
Students will identify the three physical states of water (solid, liquid, and
gas) and demonstrate the movements of water molecules in each of the states
when heat energy is added or removed.
SOLs: Science 2.3, 2.6
Third Grade
Life in
the Food Chain
45 min
A card game illustrates the roles producers, consumers, predators and prey
play in food chains and webs.
SOLs: Science 3.5
Types
by Texture
45 min
Using samples from their own yards, students will make a "dirt shake"
to determine how the various soil particles combine to create different soil
types.
SOLs: Science 3.7
Perkin' Through the Pores
45 min
Students will determine the water holding and draining
capacities of different soils. Then students will pretend to be particles of
soil through which water must filter.
SOLs: Science 3.7
Water’s
Incredible Journey
45 min
By pretending to be water droplets, students will learn the many paths water
follows through the water cycle, the forces acting on water, and the impacts
humans have on water resources.
SOLs: Science 3.8, 3.9, 3.10
Fourth Grade
Habitat
for Life
45 min
Students play “Habitat Rummy” to investigate the basic life needs of four
different species of animals.
SOLs: Science 4.5
We All
Live Downstream
45 min
Students develop a watershed to evaluate the effects of land use on water
quality.
SOLs: Science 4.8
Sixth through Eighth Grades
Who
Made This Mess!
45 min
The Enviroscape, an interactive watershed model, is used to visually demonstrate
point source and non-point source pollution helping students understand the
environmental impacts of each person in a community.
SOLs: Science 6.11
Ninth through Twelfth Grades
Get
the Groundwater Picture
45 min, plus extension
Students will identify the parts of a groundwater system, compare movements of
water through diverse substrates, and relate different types of land uses to
potential ground water contamination. A model of the groundwater system easily
demonstrates cone of depression, zones of aeration and saturation, and the water
table.
SOLs: ES.9
