Educational Grant Opportunities

The Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Fund

Gives small monetary grants to schools, nature centers, or other educational organizations whose efforts best reflect the message of creating natural landscapes using native plants and appreciating humankind's proper place in the web of life.  Established by Wild Ones in 1996, the fund honors our "philosophical compass", Lorrie Otto.  We award grants for child centered projects that create native plant landscapes or develop outdoor classrooms.

The National Gardening Association

The National Gardening Association awards 400 Youth Garden Grants to schools, neighborhood groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational programs throughout the United States.  Each grant consists of an assortment of quality tools, seeds, and gardening products generously contributed by leading companies from the lawn and garden industry and valued at more that $750.  Typically, the applications are available in February.  The resource section has grants, web sites, free material and more.

National Geographic Society Education Foundation Teacher Grants

The foundation's teacher grants are awarded to educators to facilitate their work in the classroom, school, district, and/or community.  Projects that feature outreach to urban areas are particularly encouraged.  In accordance with its mission, the foundation seeks to fund projects in either of two broad categories: 1) promoting geographic knowledge through education, and 2) promoting stewardship of natural and cultural resources.  Applications are accepted from any current teacher or administrator in and accredited K-12 school within the United States.  Application deadline is June 12th, 2003.

The Home Depot  Foundation

The Home Depot Foundation supports a wide range of nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada in the communities where company associates live and work.  The Foundation focuses on organizations that create or rehabilitate affordable housing, assist at-risk youth, protect the environment, and prepare for and respond to disasters.  Applications are accepted four times a year.  The foundation only considers unsolicited requests that match its eligibility requirements.

The National Geographic Foundation Venture Fund

The National Geographic Foundation Venture Fund's mission is to enable all children to incorporate a geographic outlook in their work, recreation, and citizenship.  Within the three focus areas: Education Extends Beyond the Classroom, Kids Learn Best by Doing, and Early Exposure Leads to Lifelong Change, the program's priorities are culture, geographic competency, and conservation.  Letters of interest must address at least one of these priorities.  The fund is looking to support between 5 and 10 projects in the range of $100,000 and $200,000 each.  Priority will be given to proposals that include matching funds.
